Designing a Scalable Learning Platform for a 40,000+ Member Community
Designing a guided creative learning platform that turns a manual membership experience into a connected digital journey. The Coloring Channel is a creative learning platform for members who want to learn through tutorials, structured lessons, and hands-on projects.
The challenge wasn't simply to put lessons online. The goal was to create an experience that could help learners discover what to learn, understand where to start, stay motivated, and progress at their own pace while making the overall membership easier to manage.

Moving Away From Manual Management
The existing experience relied heavily on manual processes to manage memberships, content and access, making it difficult to scale as the community grew.
#2
Making the Learning Journey More Accessible
Users came with different levels of colouring experience and commitment. New members needed an approachable way to explore the platform and build confidence, while experienced colourists needed ways to continue developing their skills.
#3
Keeping the Journey Engaging
Learning to colour is an ongoing process, and keeping users engaged beyond their first few lessons can be challenging. The experience needed to remain enjoyable as they continued learning and exploring.
As The Coloring Channel community grew, the goal was to move away from manual, time-consuming processes and bring a simpler, consistent, and scalable experience into the digital platform.
From understanding users and their different learning needs to creating a more structured learning experience, I focused on helping members understand where to start, explore what they need, feel motivated by their progress, and build the confidence to keep learning and creating.

Understanding the Business, Users & Ecosystem
Before designing the experience, I worked to understand how stakeholders, users, and the existing platform came together.
By looking at the existing business model, user needs, platform structure, and relationships between different stakeholders, I mapped the learning journey to identify opportunities for a simpler, more engaging experience.

Journey Mapping
Mapping the experience from first entry through continued learning to identify friction, uncertainty, and drop-off.

Bringing the Brand Into the Experience
The visual experience was designed around The Coloring Channel's existing personality and creative nature.
The brand language was carried across the interface through typography, colors, illustrations, imagery, and playful visual elements to make the digital experience feel familiar and connected to the brand.

Introducing The Coloring Channel
The resulting website was designed as the first digital touchpoint for prospective members, helping them understand the platform, explore its learning experience, and see the value of joining before making a commitment.
Powering the Member Experience Behind the Scenes
Moving away from manual member management, I created a flexible system that makes it easier to create, organize, and publish content while allowing the growing community to access the same experience without increasing manual effort.

Content could now be structured around the foundation of the member experience.
Explore Before You Commit
Members had different levels of experience and commitment, and a first visit could feel like a significant step. The experience was reduced to help members explore the platform before committing, with free resources and guided onboarding helping them understand the value before signing up.

How Did I Design a Guided Learning Journey for The Coloring Channel?
Members came with different levels of digital confidence and coloring experience. The experience was simplified with clear navigation, guided discovery points, and flexible needs so each member could continue learning, adapting to their progress, interests, and experience along the way.

Making Lessons Easier to Discover
A structured learning and filtering system makes hundreds of lessons easier to find. Members can quickly understand the available topics and techniques while using clear signals to explore and select lessons that match their current needs.

Designing for Motivation
I introduced small moments of encouragement throughout the experience, from rewards and progress moments to playful characters and messages to make learning feel more enjoyable and give members reasons to keep coming back.

Designing a More Flexible Membership Experience
Membership needs can change over time. The experience was designed so members could manage their subscription controls, pause their plan, upgrade or downgrade between plans, and understand billing without having to cancel and start again.
Stripe integration powers these changes, giving members more control over their membership while making it easier to adapt their plan as their interests, availability, or learning needs change.

Building a Scalable Foundation
The platform was built to support a growing content library, rich artwork, and long-form learning without compromising performance.
Scalable Architecture: Next.js and Next.js power the frontend and backend, with AWS RDS, S3, and CDN infrastructure supporting services and efficient content delivery.
High-Quality & Navigation: User flows were built to keep learning journeys clear, while filtering and navigation made it easier to discover lessons.
Responsive Experience: The platform adapts seamlessly across devices, layouts, and modules, keeping the learning experience consistent.
Validated Before Launch: Manual and performance testing helped validate critical flows, identify system thresholds, and deliver a stable experience across devices and content.

The Impact
Reduction in Operational Time
The shift from manual processes to a structured digital experience reduced the time spent managing member and learning-related tasks.
Greater Audience Reach
The digital experience created a more scalable way for The Coloring Channel to reach and engage with a wider audience.
Increase in Platform Adoption
A more accessible entry experience, free resources, and streamlined onboarding helped increase the number of users engaging with the platform.
Increase in Member Engagement
Guided learning, recommendations, rewards, and personalised moments encourage members to continue learning and return to the platform.
